GKV

Genesis

Gita, a beloved teacher, mother and wife whose life inspired the formation of the trust, believed that all children deserve a high-quality education regardless of their social or economic background.

She was an educator who dedicated a significant part of her time to helping underprivileged and handicapped children. As an educator, she taught in several leading schools in Delhi (Mother’s International), Mumbai (Cathedral & John Connon) and Kolkata (La Martiniere). At school, she would teach  children from privileged backgrounds to be compassionate to the less privileged by involving them in socially responsible activities.

In addition to balancing her work and family, she dedicated her after-school time to helping visually handicapped children and children from the poorest areas of each town she lived in.

She passed away in 2002 at the age of 59. The trust was founded in her memory in 2003 as a vehicle for philanthropy to various educational organisations. GKV School was formed in 2009 and is now the sole focus of the trust.

GKV is guided by the principles by which Gita lived her life. Children at GKV come from families who cannot afford quality education and are invariably the first in their families to receive formal education.
